Overview:

Brazil's Mines and Energy (MME) ministry is responsible for both energy (including the electric and oil sectors) and mines and metallurgy. It chairs the boards of the state electric company Electrobras, the largest electricity generating company in Brazil, and through its various programmes aims to promote the rationalization of the consumption of electricity, to combat waste, and reduce costs and investment, increasing energy efficiency.

- Run by Electrobras/RGR and supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF)

- Phase I: 144 renewable energy generation facilities (wind, small-hydro, biomass) with installed capacity of 3.3 GW completed in 2005

Projeto Ribeirinhas
- Promotes off-grid sustainable electricity generation for communities along the Amazon
- Feasability studies for small-hydro, biomass, and PV systems
